A row has erupted among Athlone’s taxi drivers, resulting in the resignation of the chairman of the Athlone Taxi Federation earlier this week. Chairman Paddy O’Callaghan, stepped down at a meeting on Tuesday evening after a vote of no confidence was passed in his leadership.

Members of the public in Athlone are being encouraged to have their voices heard on the issue of the provision of taxi ranks in the town. A public consultation process began this week as it was announced that the Council proposes to review the location and number of ranks in Athlone.

As a way of ensuring that the public are aware when they are using the services of a local taxi driver, Athlone Taxi Federation has launched what they are calling their ‘shop local’ initiative.
