Buccaneers’ hopes of a top four finish were boosted while also consigning Corinthians to bottom place in Division 1B after a hard-fought Ulster Bank League encounter under the Clounacauneen floodlights on Friday night when the Pirates shaded the 17-14 verdict. A decent attendance braved a nippy night with intermittent showers for this Connacht derby and, while it lacked fluency, it was always committed and close.

Four Buccaneers players have been named in Ireland squads for the forthcoming RBS Six Nations championships. Robbie Henshaw is, of course, already a key component of Joe Schimdt’s senior squad, while a trio of even younger Buccs - Rory Moloney, Stephen McVeigh, and Cian Romaine - have been included in the Ireland u20 squad by coach Nigel Carolan. Their first outing is an away game against Italy on February 6, and they tackle champions France in an Electric Ireland fixture at Dubarry Park, Athlone on Friday February 13.

Buccaneers defeated Galwegians 28-14 in a lively Connacht Senior Cup final played at Galway Sportsground last Sunday. Buccs were full value for their double score victory played on a cool but mainly bright afternoon in front of a modest attendance. Both squads did not have the use of contracted players, but the teams put in a committed, absorbing, and entertaining battle for the coveted trophy which makes a long overdue return to the Midlands.
