A suggestion by a number of county councillors that a special €100,000 fund, which has been made available by Galway County Council to fund badly needed repair works in unfinished estates across the county, be used to solely provide public lighting, was rejected by councillors at this week’s local authority meeting.

A debate on commercial rates at this week’s meeting of Galway County Council led one exasperated councillor to remark that there would not be a rural pub left in Galway in a few years time if the system was not changed. The method of collecting rates was labelled as ‘outdated and antiquated’ where the amounts paid were in no way related to business income.

There was consternation among some councillors at this weeks meeting of the Galway County Council over reports that local authorities will be forced to collect debts on behalf of Irish Water.

Galway county councillors paid warm tributes to Des Joyce after he was co-opted on to the council at this week’s local authority meeting.
