Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) this week played host to over 750 students who attended SciFest 2023, Ireland’s largest second-level STEM fair programme.

Three Moate Community School students have taken home the top prize at SciFest@TUS, one of Ireland’s largest regional science fairs for second-level students, held recently in Athlone.

On Friday November 10 Shannon McHugh and Ciara Keaveney, third-year students from Glenamaddy, and Thomas Hayes, a sixth-year student from Yeats ColLege, competed among the top young scientific minds at SciFest 2017 and were awarded an Excellance in STEM award, for their projects examing the benefits of ash as a fertiliser for plant growth, and to heart valve prototypes to treat heart valve disease. SciFest, now in its 10th year, is funded primarily by Science Foundation Ireland, Intel Ireland and Boston Scientific.

For the fourth year funning Yeats College has received outstanding success at SciFest. This competition, held annually, provides a sterling opportunity for students to creatively engage with the various scientific fields. SciFest is a series of one-day science fairs for second-level students.

Clodagh Hegarty and Aoife Parsons, students from Davitt College, Castlebar, were awarded an Excellence in STEM award, for their project 'The Education And Promotion of Breastfeeding to Children, Adolescents, and Adults' at SciFest 2016 last weekend.

Students throughout Westmeath have been called upon to put their knowledge of science to the test and enter SciFest 2014! Sponsored by SFI Discover and now in its seventh year as a national project, SciFest is an all-inclusive, all-island science competition where second-level students showcase science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) projects at a series of one day science fairs held regionally in the 14 Institutes of Technology and the University of Ulster, Derry.

Westmeath post-primary students are encouraged to get their entries in quickly for this year’s SciFest ahead of the deadline of next Friday March 12.

Westmeath secondary school students are expected to be amongst the many students entering SciFest this year. This one day festival of science is held in Institutes of Technology around the country and it is here that local secondary school students ranging from first to sixth years demonstrate their projects and participate in a competition.
