Total indulgence this January: Music for Galway unveils its 2026 Midwinter Festival
Galway’s winter cultural calendar is set for a major highlight this January as Music for Galway announces details of its much-anticipated Midwinter Festival 2026, titled The Quartet Extends. Running from Friday, January 23, until Sunday, January 25, at the Town Hall Theatre, the festival promises a rich celebration of chamber music, creativity and collaboration, and, in the words of its organisers, “total indulgence”.
Music to banish the winter
Following the clamorous Midwinter Festival featuring the works of Maurice Ravel, Music for Galway’s offensive against the darkness and the cold continues with a concert featuring the virtuosic Fidelio Trio in the welcoming setting the Hardiman Hotel’s ballroom, on Monday, February 17, at 7.30pm.
Flying the flag for Irish contemporary music
The Irish work in the programme comes from Deirdre Gribbin. Deirdre has been described as "a charismatic and intriguing new voice in contemporary music." (The Independent). She is Artistic Director of Venus Blazing Music Theatre Trust working with young people with cognitive delays. She has written for film including My Kingdom for Sky Pictures starring Richard Harris. The evening features the magical and mysterious “Merrow Sang” from 2007, which vividly recounts a tale of merrow-maidens emerging from the sea during the burial of one the Cantillon family of Ballyheigue.
