Forty patients who were due to attend an outpatient cancer clinic at University Hospital Galway on Tuesday had their appointments cancelled due to a shortage of staff.

Record numbers attending UHG’s emergency department this week has put “unprecedented” pressure on services, according to a nursing union spokesperson. There were 34 people awaiting beds on Monday, 13 were on trolleys and 17 were inappropriately accommodated in wards on Tuesday while the figures for Wednesday were the same.

Additional pressure is being put on University Hospital Galway’s already overburdened emergency department because the facility is increasingly catering for patients from a wider geographical area.

A clear contingency plan must be in place before 19 acute beds are temporarily closed at University Hospital Galway next month to facilitate the building of a 75 bed extension to the west’s biggest hospital.
