The elected members of Mayo County Council this week approved the draft planning scheme for a new Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) at Ireland West Airport Knock.

The foundations for having the former Asahi site in Killala designated as a Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) were laid at a meeting of Mayo County Council on Monday last.

Following a recent meeting of the Ireland West Airport Board, the Chairman Joe Kennedy welcomed the recent announcement by Government of the designation of lands adjacent to the airport as a Strategic Development Zone. Once this process is completed (which is estimated to take up to two years) it will provide planning certainty for any potential developments that may take place at the airport.

The process of putting a master plan in place for the strategic development zone (SDZ) at Ireland West Airport Knock (IWAK) will take in the region of two years to complete, the elected members of Mayo County Council were told this week at their June monthly meeting which was held in Carancon Parish Centre. At the meeting the members voted to defer the making of a new local area plan for the airport following the announcement a fortnight ago of the SDZ designation being approved by the Cabinet.
