Mayo A/C is this year hosting the 2013 C and C Cellular/Vodafone Mayo Athletic Awards which will be held at a gala function in Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar, this Sunday January 26. Athletes from all over Mayo will be honoured for their contribution to athletics during the past year. Certificates or awards will be presented to all athletes who won national and international medals in 2013. On the night some 100 awards will be presented.

Sunday will see round eight of the Mayo AC C&C Cellular 2012 Road Race League go to the tap in Ballina. This round of the league will be run over a four mile one lap course. The course will be well marshalled and the final mile will take runners up through the scenic Belleek Park. Race HQ will be at the Ballina AC track and entries will be taken on the day. Entry fee for the race is €20 and includes a T-shirt, the race will start at 3pm, there will be no prize fund for this race as all money will go towards cancer research. There was a blustery breeze around the 8k course as more than 100 runners lined up at the start outside Caulfield's shop in Ballyhaunis on Saturday afternoon for the fifth annual 8k run west race. It was also the seventh race in 2012 Mayo AC C&C Cellular Road League. The road was dry as they raced down main street and turned out Clare road. The pace dropped for many as they came on a tough hill section as they approached Gorteen after the 4k mark . By then Con Doherty (Westport) who led out from the start had a few seconds lead over Matt Bidwell (GCH).

After a tense wait of almost three weeks there was great news for Mayo AC following publication of the results from the National 10k Championships held on April 15 in the Phoenix Park. They came away with rich sprinkling of five gold, three silver, and two bronze with medals for four teams and in six individual categories.

Ballyhaunis was blessed with welcome September sun on Saturday afternoon for the fourth annual 8k and final race in 2011 Mayo AC C&C Cellular Road League. Race organiser Martin Fitzmaurice and team put on an excellent, well-marshalled event.

Among the thousands of runners competing in the Dublin Marathon last Bank Holiday Monday was a very strong Mayo AC team. In total 21 athletes made up the Mayo AC team which took on the gruelling course across the nationals capital. The senior men’s team consisted of John Byrne, Anthony Devanney, Timmy Glavey, Kevin Mellett, Brendan Gill, Paddy O’Toole and Dave Huane. The men’s o40 team was made up of the trio of Gerry Galvin, Christy O’Malley and Tony Gleeson, while the men’s o50 consisted of PJ Hall, Owen Mongan, Brian Cusack, Tom Hunt and Christy O’Connell. The senior women’s team was made up of Paula Prendergast, Sarah Syron, Anne Fahy, Yvonne Byrne, Anne McDonnell and Anne Shortt. There were a number of excellent performances put in by the Mayo squad and some medals may be wining their way to Mayo once the AAI confirms the team and individual results.

It is all systems go for the Balla 10k which takes place this Saturday 24 at 7pm.

The 2009 Vodafone C&C Cellular Mayo AC road league concluded with the ninth and final race at Westport on Sunday. This was the 11th annual road league and the most successful so far. Increasing numbers are taking part in the league and the Fit4Life programme has become another opportunity for people of all ages to get involved, and this is reflected especially in the number of women participating.
