The food scene in Galway has never been in a better place. There are so many talented artisan producers and retailers offering the most amazing produce and one need only visit the plethora of farmers' markets around the county to witness this. One such business is The Friendly Farmer poultry which produces the most succulent chicken, turkey, and duck directly to your dinner table courtesy of Ronan Byrne's farm in Athenry.

Ronan Byrne of the Friendly Farmer based near Athenry won the top prize in the ‘‘Rising Star of 2014’’ category at the first Zurich Farming Independent Farmer of the Year Awards, sponsored by Teagasc.

The launch of the programme for the third Galway Food Festival was held on Monday in one of my favourite Galway hang out spots, the lovely House Hotel. The late lamented Gerry Gavin had launched the first festival programme and the delightful Máirín Uí Chomáin the second. This year Ronan Byrne (aka The Friendly Farmer) did the honours beautifully. In a break with convention, they had not sought out a food celebrity, but in keeping with the theme of the festival, 'Food Traditions', a man of the land was called for. JP McMahon, festival chairperson, and Heather Flaherty also spoke at the launch.

The public are being urged to visit the upcoming Galway Food Festival and truly get involved by talking and getting to know all the producers and exhibitors who will be showing off their products and skills during the Easter bank holiday weekend event.

The proactive tone of Mullingar’s traders’ meeting on Monday night was set by an inspiring speech from Millie Walsh who declared that “people love shopping in Mullingar”.
