In the summer of 1831, famine returned to County Mayo, and the starving took to the roads in search of food. Travellers on the roads witnessed and recorded many desperate people in the fields feeding on mustard, cress, and other herbage. Convoys of horses and carts carrying food also plied the roads, and it was not long before the starving turned their attention to them. The carts had meal and flour imported through Westport, destined for markets, big houses, and famine relief depots. The authorities responded by assigning armed escorts, but hunger had disarmed people of their fear of armed soldiers and constables.

On 21 September 1797, HMS Hermione was hit by a squall off the coast of Cape Nicola Mole. The storm set in motion a series of events that led to the bloodiest mutiny in British naval history. One account places Castlebar man Patrick Walsh among the ringleaders. During the storm, Captain Hugh Pigot ordered the topsails to be reefed. The topmen struggled to get it done quickly. An angry Pigot screamed—the last man down will be flogged. In the panic, three young sailors fell to their death. Pigot had their bodies thrown overboard. Two boatswain's mates were tasked with flogging the remainder of the topmen for dissent.

Nineteen-year-old Anthony Gallagher was hanged on the Green in Castlebar on 29 August 1818. In 2018, I spent time at the National Archives searching for Gallagher while researching my history of prisons and capital punishment in County Mayo (Anatomy of a County Gaol).

It is somewhat ironic that the building on the Green in Castlebar where the Land League was founded should later bear a name denoting Empire - The Imperial. I sometimes sit on a bench on the Green or the Mall that traverses it and mentally step through the historical significance of what is before me.
