Political tensions are heightening over the decision by two local authorities to purchase the derelict Imperial Hotel in Castlebar. Fine Gael Minister of State Michael Ring has responded angrily to Labour town councillor Harry Barrett who told the Westport deputy last week to “butt out” of the Imperial Hotel purchase in Castlebar, which has become the centre of political wrangling.

The work to rule by members of the public sector saw Castlebar Town Council meet last week without a town engineer or assistant in his place. “Because of the industrial action neither the town engineer nor his assistant nor other members will be here,” town manager Seamus Granahan told the meeting. “I suggest that we would have our next meeting during working hours.”

As some of the public sector workers commence their industrial action against the proposed pension levy, and as others ballot their members to do likewise, Dr Bernie Courtney, Labour candidate in the Castlebar Town Council election calls for both Mayo Fianna Fáil TDs to push for a Government re-think on this unjust tax.
