Claremorris, who have had a great start to the Super League this season winning three of their opening four games, will be looking to keep up that good form on Saturday evening in the Connacht Gold Cup, the only all top level clash of the round. Michael Hutton’s side will make the trip to The Green to take on a bottom of the table Ballinrobe Town side who have not even been able to get a point on the board so far this season. Ballinrobe are coming into the game off the back of a 4-2 home defeat to league leaders Castlebar Celtic, while Claremorris were the latest side to topple defending champions Ballina Town with a 3-1 win in north Mayo. Derek Glynn was the man on target for Claremorris last weekend, grabbing all three goals in their win.

Iorras Aontaithe stayed top of the Mayo Super League last weekend after they came from two goals down to beat Snugboro United in Carne last weekend, while champions Ballina Town were surprisingly overturned by Castlebar Celtic in Celtic Park. Iorras have a 100 per cent record from their six games so far and are now four points clear of Ballina and have a game in hand. But they had to do it the hard way last weekend; Sean Curry put the visitors one up earlier on and they doubled their lead shortly after when David Colleran headed home their second.

While the Super League continues apace this weekend, from the Premier Division down all the clubs are out in cup action. Claremorris currently sit on top of the Premier Division, with two wins from two, and have a long trek to Kilmore to contend with on Sunday afternoon. Our first aim is to ensure that we don’t end up in relegation trouble and push on from there, it’s a very tough league that will be very tight at both the top and bottom,” was Hutton’s assessment of the league.”

The last chance of a Mayo side bringing national glory at junior level back to the county this season disappeared last Sunday when Ballina Town bowed out at the sixth round stage of the FAI Junior Cup. Shangan Athletic, who had seen off Straide and Foxford United in the previous round, came out victorious once again over Mayo opposition; this time they saw off Mayo’s top side. Despite going one up and being in control of the game early on Ballina conceded three first-half goals in quick succession and were never able to get back into the contest.
