Critical that housing grant changes are approved
A number of changes to the housing grant schemes operated by Mayo County Council will be put before the elected members of the council when they next meet. At the Ballina Municipal District April meeting, director of services for Mayo County Council, Paul Benson, told the district members: “Housing grants are on the adjourned April agenda, hopefully we will get moving on that. We have approved grants up to December 2014. It’s important we do get the changes recommended through, because we are looking at currently being able to approve grants up to the end of February this year, and that’s it until probably next November unless we get changes.”

Housing improvement grants reaching critical point
The housing grants administered by Mayo County Council for older people, including repairs, adaptation, and mobility grants is reaching a critical point and needs to be addressed soon. That was the message given by director of services with responsibility for housing for Mayo County Council, Paul Benson. The council provided a grant of up to 75 per cent of the total costs of works carried out and has allocated €2.8 million in next year’s budget for the three schemes, however at last Monday’s budget meeting of the council Mr Benson warned there may be trouble ahead with the scheme.
Ballina councillors outraged at OPW no show
At yesterday’s meeting of the Ballina Municipal District there was serious anger directed from the councillors at the Office of Public Works. At their previous meeting the councillors had requested that the OPW attended yesterday’s meeting to address their concerns over flood defences in the Ballina area.
