RTE’s Sean O’Rourke will visit Mayo next Friday, November 2, to launch a new political biography of Taoiseach Enda Kenny. The presenter of the RTE radio and television programmes, News At One and The Week in Politics, will be in the TF Royal Hotel, Castlebar, at 6pm to launch the new book entitled Enda Kenny The Unlikely Taoiseach. The book is written by political journalist John Downing and published by Paperweight Publications. It tells the story of Enda Kenny’s 36-year-long political journey from Castlebar to Government Buildings, and his 10-year campaign to successfully overcome reverses, doubts, slights and an outright party mutiny, to become Taoiseach in March 2011.

At a recent meeting of Castlebar Fianna Fail Cumann, held at the Welcome Inn Hotel, it was unanimously agreed that a vote of thanks and appreciation be extended to former EU commissioner Padraig Flynn for his work on behalf of Castlebar and County Mayo during his years of public service.

Fianna Fail in government was corrupt. Previous findings against former Taoiseach Charles Haughey have now also been applied to other party members, specifically our own Castlebar native and ex-government minister and EU commissioner, Padraig Flynn, while ex-taoiseach Bertie Ahern has been found to have been “untruthful” relating to his financial affairs.

When Enda Kenny became Taoiseach last March of a country facing economic ruin, talk was that the little largesse available to him would barely register on the home front. In contrast to the Fianna Fail-led governments that allowed party members such as Padraig Flynn gain the 'Pee Flynn Ring Road' moniker, those whose political persuasion matched that of our current homegrown Taoiseach were not expected to garner much in the way of spoils, given that so few were actually available for divvying out.

While Enda Kenny swept the boards across the county as Fine Gael surged to picking up four seats in Mayo, there was also a shift in the power base of TDs in the county last weekend. For the first time in a number of years, Ballina has the largest number of TDs in the county. The election of both Fine Gael’s Michelle Mulherin and the return of Fianna Fáil’s Dara Calleary has seen Ballina overtake Castlebar in the number of TDs.

“It is entirely up to the people of Carlow Kilkenny as to what they do with their votes but unless there are two seats in this constituency there may not be a senior minister position.” That’s the warning from incoming Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, in last week’s Kilkenny Advertiser. So what happened to picking the best person for the job? Surely that’s what we’re electing this government for, not to return favours to vote getters, regardless of their ability? We’ve seen enough gobshites topping the poll over the years, Bertie Ahern, Padraig Flynn, Jackie Healy-Rae immediately spring to mind, and dragging in a second or even a third candidate on their coat tails. We want the best man or woman for the job, Mr Kenny, the days of returning favours are over. If you don’t believe me ask the IMF or the ECB.
