Troy turns on the style
Chris Troy (Castlebar CC) took his biggest road win of the season at the Mayo County Road Racing Championship held on a course based out of Cong but raced in the foothills of Joyce country. Cunga CC promoted the event and was well attended by most of the Mayo clubs. Troy, known more for his time trailing skills, used this discipline to forge a gap on the peloton, an early attack into a biting headwind looked doomed until strong man Richard Meaney Westport Covey CC jumped across.
Sun, sea, and the odd football game
The four provincial winners have eventually been decided with Dublin and Donegal winning their respective finals in Leinster, and Ulster joining Kerry and of course Mayo. I was in a very precarious position last Sunday at 1.30pm, sitting in 30 degrees of heat by a gorgeous pool in the Algarve, do I stay or do I go to watch potential opponents for Mayo. There was only one winner, I left the swimming pool as I would have been uneasy sitting, wondering what was going on. I happened to meet former Breaffy player Robert Fahy and two of his kids who were there for the same reason as myself, we wanted to see if the Dubs were beatable as most people felt Meath were the team to do it.
Croagh Patrick world record climb attempt
Friday July 1 could be remembered as the day Croagh Patrick broke all records. A group of hardy souls have been in training for the past four months and are now ready to set a few records straight. The group aim to climb up and down the mountain 12 times with three objectives in mind. The first is a Guinness World record attempt for the highest metres ascended and descended in a 24 hour period. The second is to break the national record of nine climbs on the holy mountain in one day, and thirdly to climb more metres than Everest, and go beyond the endurance required climbing the highest mountain in the world, and to achieve it without leaving the country.
