The elected members of Mayo County Council approved a €30 million overdraft for 2012 at the November meeting of the local authority this week. The €30 million figure is a €5 million drop from the figure approved for 2011. Head of finance for Mayo County Council Peter Duggan told the members the reason for the reduction in the overdraft limit was because of a reduced capital works programme for the coming year.

Ballina Town Council this week approved to have in place an overdraft facility to the value of €1 million for the council.

Mayo County Council this year has paid out €200,000 in overdraft payments to a bank while it awaits a payment of €9 million from central government to pay for sanitary projects in the county. At the meeting the members later approved the extension of the council’s overdraft facility up to €35 million to the end of 2011. The breakdown of the overdraft was €30 million for the capital programme and €5 million for the revenue account (day to day running costs).
