The HSE West is owed more than €10 million because a number of hospital consultants have failed to sign off private health insurance claims promptly. Some €5.8m of this is outstanding to University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park.

Patient Councils are to be formed by the new West and North West Hospital Group which will advise on service development and issues relating specifically to patient care. The aim of the council will be to improve the quality of services provided at the seven hospitals in the newly formed group.

Mayo General Hospital will not be downgraded and in fact could benefit from additional services due to its inclusion in the new West and North West Hospital Group.
