The first charter granted to Castlebar by King James I 400 years ago has been translated in full into English for the first time. The task of translating the 1613 grant of incorporation was undertaken as part of a body of research by Noel Campbell for his forthcoming book on local government in Castlebar 1613-2014.

At the March meeting of the council Mr Campbell gave the members a brief presentation on the research work he has carried out so far, which will go back as far as 1750. Campbell’s presentation gave the background to the town getting its first charter and the different types of local government that were in operation over the past 400 years in the town, and how it was used for different purposes by those in power at different times.

Local goverment analysis in Castlebar Town Council history compilation
A research project into the history of Castlebar Town Council and its preceding authorities spanning four centuries is being undertaken by local man Noel Campbell. The project, with the working title A History of Castlebar Town Council - its predecessors, personalities and events, is a recording of the responsibilities of each authority, the various colourful people who sat on them and the local and national events that shaped them. The work begins in detail in the 1830s and will run up until the last local elections of 2009.

Sinn Féin in Mayo has set out its stall to win at least one seat in the forthcoming general election by selecting two candidates to contest the election. At last weekend’s selection convention, Mayo county councillor Rose Conway Walsh and Castlebar town councillor Thérèse Ruane were the successful nominees to go forward and try to win a seat in the 31st Dáil.
