Galway Handball was well represented in Dublin’s Citywest Arena for the World Handball Championships last week.

Ballaghaderreen’s Stephen Cooney claimed the men’s 23 and under title at the Irish Nationals Championships in Kingscourt, Co Cavan, last weekend. The Mayo ace comfortably defeated Sam Temple from Kildare in the quarter-finals and followed that win with a 21-12, 21-11 defeat of Newport’s Ciaran Burke in the semi-final. Cooney faced Limerick’s C J Fitzpatrick in the decider on Sunday last.

•SPORTS PERFORMANCE: The Sports Performance Centre in Oranmore Business Park is offering individual athletes and teams of all sporting disciplines scientific based programmes. The centre is open for children from six years of age up at the initiation stage up to high performance stage for adults 19 years and over. There are four phases of development at the centre: 6 to 10 years old – Initiation Development Phase; 11 to 14 years old – Athletic Development Phase; 15-18 years old – Specialisation Phase; 19+ years old - High Performance Phase. During the four phases, all athletes learn how to optimise their general athletic motor skills. The programme includes coordination and balance, speed , general endurance (aerobic and progressive anaerobic from specialisation phase), progressive anatomical adaptation for strength and power development, and flexibility and agility. Galway’s young handballers won seven out of eight finals at the recent 40x20 provincial finals hosted by St Mary’s College.

There were no real surprises in the two provincial senior finals at Ballaghaderreen on Saturday afternoon as all-Ireland senior doubles champions Dessie Keegan and Joe McCann maintained their unbeaten run to take the provincial title at the expense of fellow club mates Vincent Moran and Campbell Brennan. The champions were in devastating form in a very one sided opener and they won it for the loss of just two aces. Moran and Brennan finally got around to playing some handball in the second and the duo, to their credit, made a real fight of it and it looked like the game could go either way at one stage. However Keegan and McCann did just enough to see off the challenge as they won the second 21 aces to 17. Marianna Rushe ran out the expected easy winner of the ladies’ senior singles final with an easy two games to nil victory over fellow St Coman’s contender Leona Doolin.
