Mayo's Vincent Moran failed in his bid to capture a first ever All-Ireland senior singles hardball title at Mullingar on Saturday evening but he made the eventual winner — Eoin Kennedy of Dublin — work hard for his win. Kennedy dominated from the off and took the first game surprisingly easily on a 21 aces to six scoreline. However the Ballaghaderreen man came good in the second, playing some fantastic handball, and he won it 21 aces to 12. Kennedy raced into a commanding 11 aces to one lead in the deciding third and, despite Moran's best efforts, he was unable to recover from that bad start and lost it 21 aces to 10.

Twenty-five-year-old Yvonne Moran from Mulranny who tragically lost her life this week following a two car road traffic collision was laid to rest on Thursday in Kileen Cemetery.

Two men appeared before Ballina District Court this week after they were in possession of a knife and a hoe in the early hours of the morning in the vicinity of a residential estate. Another man, who is related to the men, also faced charges after he tried to prevent their arrest.

A 36-year-old who was found trespassing on a Ballinrobe man’s property and subsequently assaulted him was sentenced to five months in prison at this week’s sitting of Ballinrobe District Court.
