A decade and a half ago in 2005, it was a so-so year for the Mayo senior footballers. A year after reaching the All Ireland final, they had a league semi-final loss to Armagh in the Spring, which was followed by elimination from the championship at the quarter-final stage at the hands of Kerry, having been beaten by Galway in the provincial decider.

This weekend will see the last three quarter-finalists in the Mayo Senior Football Championship book their spot in the last eight of the competition, while another four sides will be confined to the relegation play-offs.

It's back to the cut and thrust of action in the Mayo GAA senior club championship for the first time in over three months this weekend. While the junior championship has been moving along in the background and the semi-final stages down for decision this weekend, it has been long summer without championship action for the 16 senior clubs.
