Confusion cleared as business end of championship begins
It certainly has been an action-packed if somewhat confusing week on the football front in Westmeath. In a typical case of Murphy’s law a bizarre set of results left three teams: Garrycastle, Tyrrellspass, and Castledaly, all on six points fighting for two knockout places in section B.
Bunbrosna and St Malachy’s the big winners in round three
There was plenty of drama and a few surprises too as a full schedule of round three games were played in the Westmeath senior football championship last weekend. While Maryland made it three wins out of three in group B and Tyrrellspass and Garrycastle recorded important wins in division A, the big winners from the weekend were Bunbrosna and St Malachy’s.
Garrycastle remain on track to retain title
Reigning champions Garrycastle booked their place in the last four of this year’s competition at the expense of close neighbours Athlone in Hogan Park Moate on Saturday evening last.
No major surprises in round one of senior championship
Championship football often throws up its fair share of surprises but there were no major shocks to report after round one of the Shay Murtagh senior football championship. Athlone’s three point win over last year’s beaten finalists will have taken some by surprise but would hardly register as a shock. St Malachy’s came very close to pulling off a major upset over hot favourites Mullingar Shamrocks, losing out by a single point. Tubberclare marked their return to senior ranks with a one point win over Killucan while Castledaly and the Downs played out a draw. Meanwhile reigning champions Garrycastle got their title defence off to a winning start with three points to spare over Tyrrellspass.
Club championship gets under way
It may be only April but the Westmeath senior and intermediate football championships kick into action this weekend with a full list of games down for decision. With an earlier than usual start, this year’s championship has crept up on us almost unnoticed.
