University of Galway has announced plans to celebrate Irish Traveller Ethnicity Week with a week-long series of events across campus.

On January 15, 1827 two Patrician Brothers, Paul O’Connor and James Walsh, took up residence in Lombard Street and set up the Monastery School. The attendance on that first day was 300 boys, many of whom had little interest in learning because they were poor and hungry. So the Brothers set up The Poor Boy’s Breakfast Institute in May 1830. It continued seven days a week, 365 days a year for many years after the founders' time. The breakfast consisted of porridge with molasses or treacle, and during the Famine, they fed 1,000 boys every day. The ‘Old Mon’ became a vital cog in education in Galway.

The year 1967 saw a great change in Galway as the industrial estate was being developed as a result of the Government’s decision to designate Galway as a development location, a place which would be the commercial, financial, educational, health, social, and administrative centre of the region. The IDA was buying land and building factories in anticipation of attracting industry to the county. It is a measure of its success that within two years, on Monday November 10, 1969, ANCO (An Comhairle Oiliúna) opened a new training centre on the estate.

Six men ordered to stay out of Mayo after being charged with assault in Ballyhaunis
Following an outbreak of violence on Monday morning in Ballyhaunis at the funeral of well known Traveller Martin ‘Red Breast’ McDonagh, six men from Donegal appeared at Castlebar District Court on Tuesday morning. The six men, all of whom are brothers, were released on bail to appear again before the court on July 19 for DPP directions and the possibility of further charges being brought forward.
