The Connacht Junior Cup was donated by a man called Senior. He was Alfred Senior, professor of chemistry in UCG from 1891 to 1918. The cup was first played for in 1905, and as Ralph O’Gorman says in his wonderful book entitled Rugby in Connacht, the event always had a unique culture, it was competitive and unpredictable, and had a wide geographical spread of participating clubs.

The Bish, one hundred and fifty years
On this day one hundred and fifty years ago, St. Joseph’s Secondary School formally opened. It represented a triumph for Dr McEvilly, Bishop of Galway, who had worked tirelessly to get the Patrician Brothers to Galway to add to the educational facilities for Catholic boys in the city. Indeed the bishop’s association with the school was such that it became known as ‘The Bish’. Others regarded it as a seminary for preparing boys for the priesthood and so it was also known colloquially as ‘The Sem’.

Galway Lawn Tennis Club holds a table quiz on Monday March 8 at 8 pm. It is a fundraiser for two members of the club, Jenny Burrows and Jonathan Klampe, who have been selected to represent Ireland at the ITF World Senior Tennis Team Championships in Mexico from March 26 to April 4. Burrows and Klampe are coaches at GLTC, who also work with Connacht’s development squads. Tables of four are €40 each with prizes for the winners, spot prizes, and a raffle.

A selection of students from Shane Fitzgibbon’s “Connacht Taekwon-do Schools” recently attended the International Irish Championships in Neptune Stadium, Cork. With representation from seven European countries, the standard was extremely high. The local group held their own however to bring back a fine haul of silverware. The Galway instructors who attended were Shane Fitzgibbon (Galway and Oranmore), Lisa Connolly (Labane & Kinvara), Sally Whelan (Barna) and Sandra Doyle (Loughrea). The results were as follows: Black belt results —Shane Fitzgibbon – Gold, silver, bronze; Cillian Howard (Oranmore) – bronze; Shannon Holland (Galway) – bronze; Kenneth Duignan (Galway) – bronze; Cathal Kilbane (Galway) - silver; Jason Costello (Oranmore) - bronze; Sandra Doyle (Galway) - bronze; Ciaran Doyle (Galway) - bronze. A homeless alcoholic who trespassed in a city centre apartment while a woman was asleep in her bed was remanded on continuing bail while his suitability for community service is assessed.
Unexpected visitors during World War II
Shortly after dawn on Saturday, September 16 1944, Michael Conneely, a bachelor of 55 years was asleep in his cottage at Ailleabreach, Ballyconneely, when loud banging on his door woke him. He shouted ‘who’s there?’ The storm of the previous two days had abated but he couldn’t make out what the voice said. Grabbing a pitchfork, he slowly opened to door. Outside were two men, wet to the skin, in deep distress. Michael put the pitchfork to the throat of the first man: ‘Who are you?
