Moonlight and magic in Mayo as Dark Skies Festival goes online
The towns and villages bordering Ireland’s only dark sky park are teaming up once again to organise the fifth annual Mayo Dark Sky Festival, which takes place on October 31st next. The 2020 Festival will be a little different of course, as it will take place online, respecting current Covid-19 restrictions.
Government thanks local group for discovery of important prehistoric burial site in Mayo
The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has received details of scientific analysis of ancient human remains which were discovered in 2016 by a local hillwalker on a Mayo mountainside. The discovery generated significant media interest, and research has now revealed that the natural boulder chamber in which the remains were found was used for human burial practice through the Neolithic period, from as early as 3600BC.
Large crowds turn out on Easter Monday for Trek to Freedom walk
On Easter Monday, a large contingent of walkers and history enthusiasts departed from Newport to follow in the footsteps of Michael Kilroy's flying column, who during the War of Indepdence escaped through the mountains and countryside of Newport following an ambush in Kilmeena. The day started in upper Skirdagh where Niamh Chambers read the Proclamation followed by Billy Chambers' account of the West Mayo Flying Column. Then it was on to the now ruins of what was in their day the safe houses, where Michael Kilroy's men rested after the Kilmeanna ambush. Here Patrick Carey told the group about the people who once lived here and the men they looked after.
