‘It’s all about political corruption’
THE FIRST ‘homegrown’ theatre highlight of the year is Theatrecorp’s staging of one of the greatest of all Jacobean tragedies - John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi - in the Black Box Theatre on Tuesday February 3. First staged around 1614, it is a dark and bloody drama about class, corruption, power, intrigue, murder, and madness.

Whiskey galore for Old Athlone Society
Distilling in counties Westmeath and Offaly is the subject of the Old Athlone Society’s January lecture which will be given by Michael Byrne of Offaly Historical and Archaeological Society. The lecture will take place on Tuesday January 20 in The Prince of Wales Hotel at 8pm, and will be fully illustrated.
John Spillane to launch the late Joe Ducke’s last book
Local author Dr Joe Ducke completed his collection of short stories in late 2008. Although Dr Ducke sadly passed away on January 3 this year, the official launch of his work, Tell Me Sweet Little Lies, is to go ahead next Sunday, February 1 in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel.
GMIT student innovation winners
GMIT Castlebar has announced its student innovation winners. First prize went to Joanne Clarke from Cloonfad, Co Roscommon, a second year student on the BSc in architectural technology. She was awarded a prize of €1,000 cash and incubation space in the GMIT Innovation Centre for two months. Second prize was awarded to Diarmuid Higgins from Rush, Co Dublin, who is a second year student on the BA in outdoor education. He won €600. Both prizes are sponsored by APC and AIB.
