Mayo Sinn Féin Cllr Rose Conway-Walsh lost out in the race for the party’s nomination for the EU elections next year at their selection convention last Sunday night in Sligo. Delegates on the evening selected Matt Carty as the Sinn Féin candidate in the EU elections in the north-western constituency.

On December 7 1922, less than eight months after the Kilmilkin battle, Pádraic Ó Máille TD and his friend Sean Hales TD of Cork, walked out of a hotel on Ormonde Quay, by Dublin’s river Liffy. They just had lunch, and were on their way back to the Dáil in Leinster House, a short drive away. The annual Coolbawn Ambush Commemoration took place in Castlecomer on Saturday June 18, exactly 90 years since that fateful day. The event was organised by North Kilkenny Sinn Féin and drew a large, enthusiastic, crowd to the town despite the inclement weather.
