Call for vaccination centre in Ballina

Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Loftus has called for a second Covid-19 vaccination centre in the county to be established in Ballina. Cllr Loftus raised the issue at the April meeting of the Ballina Municipal District, saying that it would speed up the whole process and that a town the size of Ballina, along with the north Mayo region, should have a centre. He asked for the council to write to the Department of Health to raise the matter. He was backed by his party colleague Cllr Annie May Reape and Fine Gael Cllr John O’Hara in this call.

On June 7 1917 Major Willie Redmond, MP for East Clare, was killed in action leading the Royal Irish Brigade to victory at the Battle of Messines Ridge at Ypres. A member of the Irish Parliamentary Party (his brother John was party leader), he had represented East Clare at Westminster for 25 years. At 53 years of age Redmond was too old to be a soldier. But he was convinced that an Ireland loyal to the Crown would succeed in achieving Home Rule, and so he joined the Irish troops at Flanders.
