Harsh reality of direct provision accommodation laid out in report
The harsh reality of life for more than 300 asylum seekers and refugees who live in direct provision accommodation in Mayo was laid bare this week. GMIT Castlebar hosted a launch for the “One size doesn’t fit all” report published by the Free Legal Advice Centre (FLAC) , in association with Mayo Intercultural Association. The report marks the 10th anniversary of direct provision accommodation in Ireland. Currently there are 315 people living in Ballyhaunis in direct provision accommodation, there were centres in both Kiltimagh and Cong previously providing accommodation but have since been closed.
Fine Gael’s new voice with new ideas
“I believe in the policies and I believe that I can help Castlebar to become a better town.” With the election conventions doing the rounds across all the parties in the different areas in Mayo, one name was more unusual than the others to come out of the nominating stages and on to the ticket. Nigerian native Okay William Kalu got the nod to run on the six person Fine Gael Castlebar Town Council ticket for next June’s elections.
Barrett and Ruane co-opted on to Castlebar Town Council
Castlebar Town Council was returned to its quota of nine councillors at last week’s monthly meeting of the local authority. Labour’s Harry Barrett and Sinn Féin’s Therese Ruane were co-opted on to the council in place of Johnny Mee and Noel Campbell respectively.
Extra seat and retiring councillors line up exciting race
One more seat and three councillors retiring from politics makes the battle for the seven seats in the Castlebar electoral area one of the most interesting races in this year’s local elections. The transfers of Burriscarra, Portroyal and Roslee with their combined population of 1,327 people from the old Ballinrobe area to the Castlebar area has really thrown the race for seats in the county town wide open. There are 12 going to post on June 5 and, with only three sitting councillors going for re-election, there will be at the very least four new faces or maybe three new and one old representing the Castlebar area in the next council.
