A record year for estate takeovers in Mayo in 2013
At this month’s SPC for planning and economic development, Cllr Eugene McCormack welcomed the efforts by Mayo County Council and the significant progress made in taking over housing estates and completing unfinished estates. John McMyler, senior executive planner, told the meeting that Mayo Co Council had embarked on a significant programme of assessing estates for taking in charge, and in this regard 104 estates were taken over in 2013 which was a record, and that the process was continuing in 2014 with more estates in the pipeline.

Claremorris open exhibition attracts huge numbers
This years’ Claremorris open art exhibition has been attracting record crowds who have been coming from far and wide to see the huge range of art on offer. This year’s exhibition features artists from Ireland and abroad. COE 08 was curated by Lizzie Carey Thomas from the Tate Gallery, London who selected 32 artists from a record number of entries.The exhibition was opened last week by Mayo’s most famous TD Beverley Flynn. According to this year’s artist in residence, sculptor Cathal Mc Carthy, the exhibition is being received very warmly on account of the rich variety of works to be seen and there is something for everybody in Claremorris this year from video to painting to sculpture and installations.
