Excel 15 is gearing up to get going
Excel 15, Mayo County Council’s annual exuberant celebration of young people’s creativity takes place this March. A feast of events, workshops, exhibitions and showcases await this year’s young audiences and events are happening right across the county.
Launch of I to EYE at Sacred Heart Hospital Castlebar
Mayo County Council Arts Office celebrated the launch of I to EYE, the culmination of a project which took place earlier in 2012 at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar. On Tuesday, November 27. Cathaoirleach Cyril Burke officially launched a woven tapestry created by the residents, staff, and visitors of the Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar, during the Bealtaine Festival, which takes place annually across the country during the month of May.
Bealtaine 2012 draws to close
As May came close so to did the end of a very successful Bealtaine 2012 programme for Mayo County Council Arts Office. This was the 17th year of Ireland’s national celebration of creativity as we age. Bealtaine aims to involve older people in the arts, through expression and active participation. It also encourages older people to engage as an experienced audience for all art forms. During May 2012 Mayo County Council Arts Office worked with active retirement associations throughout Mayo as well as some of the community nursing units in the county.
Parke Drama Group wins award
Parke Drama Group has been awarded the Mayo County Council Amateur Drama Award for 2011, following assessment by external independent expertise.
Culture Night – what will you see in Mayo on September 23?
It’s that time of year again; when cultural organisations and groups are busily preparing to throw open their door to audiences who eagerly anticipate the delights that await on September 23. The event in Mayo began in 2009 and Mayo was the first countywide Culture Night. Since then the number of participants has steadily grown and this year 25 cultural hotspots throughout County Mayo will be sharing and showcasing a wide variety of cultural events on September 23.

Poetry reading in library
As part of All Ireland Poetry Day, Mayo Arts Office and Mayo County Library are delighted to present Achill born poet John F Deane and Dublin based poet Anne Le Marquand Hartigan, who will give a reading in Mayo County Library, Castlebar, on Thursday October 7 at 6.30pm.
Writer in residence
Mayo County Council Arts Office is delighted to announce Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill as Writer in Residence 2010. Ní Dhomhnaill will be working with a number of writers groups and schools throughout the county during the month of May and June.
Celebrate creativity in older people
Mayo County Council Arts Office is working with more than 20 active retirement associations throughout Mayo during Bealtaine 2009. Workshops with professional facilitators will take place in numerous art forms including dance, drama, creative writing, music and memory, samba and percussion, storytelling, and visual art.
Force 12 2009 Residency Programme
Mayo County Council Arts Office has announced that Éilís Ní Dhuibhne will be the Force 12 2009 writer in residence. Éilís will be working with a number of writers groups and schools throughout the county over a two-week period, during the month of May and June.
