For more than 150 years, the story of Thomas McDonogh & Sons has been closely connected with the story of Galway itself. From the sawmills and quays of the nineteenth century to modern commercial property and agricultural supply, the family business has witnessed—and helped shape—the transformation of the city from a modest western port into a centre of commerce, industry and culture.

Our photograph was taken on June 5, 1927 from the platform of a Cumann na nGaedheal election rally in Eyre Square. The crowd (almost entirely male), “looked voters every one”. In the background you can see the Browne Doorway and the Railway Hotel.
