Rowing ‘matches’ or ‘badge races’ have been taking place on the river for at least 150 years. Initially, they were confined to members of Corrib Rowing and Yachting Club, as it was the only boating club in existence here. When the Commercial Club was formed in 1875, a meeting was held to promote a regatta on the stretch of river under Menlo Castle. It was well attended, and there was general agreement that the regatta should be independent of both clubs, and open to everybody.

The Order of Malta was founded in the 12th century in Jerusalem to care for Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land and along pilgrimage routes through Christian Europe. Three first-half Portumna goals ultimately proved the difference between the sides in this slow burning semi final played at Kenny Park yesterday. The champions are back once again in another final and it is difficult to look past them yet, as in recent rounds, they only impressed in fleeting spurts. Mellows will be disappointed with their own performance, as their disastrous start cost dearly. In fact, were it not for the Border men’s first half profligacy in front of goal, Mellows would have been far greater in arrears than the seven-point half time margin.
