All roads throughout the country will lead to Athlone this coming weekend from May 25 to May 27 for the first weekend of the HSE National Community Games finals. More than 3,000 young competitors will descend on the Athlone Institute of Technology to take part in various sporting and cultural events. Mayo Community Games will be strongly represented by 90 young participants who will compete in art, model making, handwriting, chess, project, indoor soccer, table quiz, table tennis, and mixed distance relays. In the cultural section there is competition in the group music, dancing and singing. The programme will also include solo music, singing and solo recitation.

This contest, played under glorious autumnal sunshine yesterday morning in Bohermore, fashioned an enjoyable and sporting spectacle. The home side, despite missing a number of regular starters, were full value for the win, as an energetic second-half display turned the tie in their direction.

West United made the trip out to play Tuam Celtic on a cold, wet and windy Sunday morning in the FAI Junior Cup, but their tie was called to a premature halt 10 minutes into the second half when referee Martin Hynes abandoned the game due to the deteriorating nature of the pitch.

The Galway and District League got their Oscar Traynor Trophy campaign off to a winning start on Saturday night at Terryland Park when they gained revenge on the Inishowen League for last year’s defeat at the same stage of the competition.

By the time that the Galway League awoke from their slumber in this contest with the Mayo League they were chasing the game for a draw which would have sent them through to the knock-out stages of the Oscar Traynor Trophy. It was not to be for the Galway League and in all honestly it never looked like they would threaten Emmett Payton's goal over the course of a bitterly cold 90 minutes in Castlebar.
