Galway athlete Gary Thornton claimed the runner-up medal in this year’s AAI National 10k Championships which were incorporated into the Great Ireland Run for the first time.

Galway Lawn Tennis Club holds a table quiz on Monday March 8 at 8 pm. It is a fundraiser for two members of the club, Jenny Burrows and Jonathan Klampe, who have been selected to represent Ireland at the ITF World Senior Tennis Team Championships in Mexico from March 26 to April 4. Burrows and Klampe are coaches at GLTC, who also work with Connacht’s development squads. Tables of four are €40 each with prizes for the winners, spot prizes, and a raffle.

Mayo athlete nominated in the 2008 National Athletics Awards

One of Mayo’s top young athletes is in with a chance of walking away with an award at next weekend’s Athletics Ireland National Athletics Awards. Pamela Hughes from Westport AC is nominated following her impressive performances this season. The second annual National Athletics Awards, which are in association with Waterford Crystal, will honour the best Irish athletes, clubs and coaches from across the country.

Galway youngsters shine at All Ireland cross-country

Galway athletes had a successful day of cross country running at the All-Ireland Juvenile Championships for uneven ages and the novice championships for men and women in Ballyhaise, Co Cavan, on Sunday.

•FAI chief executive John Delaney will turn the first sod on the new Oughterard Association Football Club sports facilities on Thursday week. The new sports pitches and facilities are located at New Village, Oughterard. Phase one - the construction of the first natural grass pitch and ground works for the 10 acre site - has commenced and will cost €650,000. In order to raise the estimated total costs of €1.5 million for the full site development, OAFC is hosting a pitchmaker draw on St Patrick’s Day 2009. Prizes include a sporty Mazda 2 car, boat and trailer, €2,000 Marks & Spencer voucher, €1,000 holiday voucher, and laptop.
