Liptons in Shop Street

image preview

Our first image today is a beautiful study of part of Shop Street c1900. It is one of a number of Galway city photographs that are in an old album belonging to Norman Healy whom we thank for sharing it with us. The two women in the foreground are in their working clothes, plain black shawls and práiscíns which were heavy canvas working aprons used to carry vegetables or maybe fish in, or wear when they were washing clothes. One is carrying a basket which probably contained product she had to sell, possibly eggs, country butter or vegetables. The other lady may have had a basket strapped to her back. The gentleman behind is wearing an impressive white báinín jacket.

What makes the Latin Quarter stand apart from other place is its uniqueness and its ability to attract businesses and services that seem such a natural fit with its overall ethos. 2 Wild Geese opened their doors in November 2018 in the Corbett Court Shopping Centre when they realised that there was a need in Galway to provide a premises where local designers and crafts people would have a route to market, be it through the traditional retail or by shelf-to-rent premise.

Shop Street, 1903

This was Shop Street, Galway’s main street, decorated for the visit of Edward VII in 1903. The poles along the footpath were especially erected to carry bunting and decorations and many buildings had their own flags and other forms of decoration. It was a big occasion in the city. The prince came into the station on the railway from Clifden, was taken by horse and carriage around the Square, through the streets, and around by Raven Terrace and back to the Docks where his royal yacht was waiting.
