Lieutenant Colonel Máirtín Coffey is only one month into his new role as Barracks Commander of Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa, in Renmore, but he is no stranger to Galway city. He wants to improve the relationship between the military, and the wider city its members and families live in.

The first golf course in Galway was constructed by Lieutenant Colonel Jourdain, the last Colonel of the Connaught Rangers, on military grounds at Renmore Barracks, between the rifle range and Cromwell’s Fort, in 1893. Play was originally confined to military personnel, but then some members of the public were invited and it took off so well that the colonel and his friends were invited to lay out a course on Knocknacarra Hill.

Although beaming with pride, there was a chastened atmosphere amongst family and friends of soldiers of the 126th Infantry Battalion, on parade in Renmore Barracks last Friday, before deploying to Lebanon next week.

Officer Commanding 6 Inf Bn and Custume Barracks, together with the serving members of Custume Barracks, will host an Open Day on Sunday, September 18, for the families of all members of Custume Barracks, with members of the general public also welcome to attend.

In January of this year, Lieutenant Colonel Caimin Keogh assumed command of An Chéad Cath battalion in Renmore’s Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa Barracks. As a Galway-man Lt Colonel Keogh is immensely proud to lead his home-town battalion, as he told me when I sat down with him in his office on Monday afternoon.
