Reunion of the Bish classes of 1965 and 1966

image preview

Two hundred years ago, in October 1826, the Warden of Galway wrote to the Superior of the Patrician Brothers asking him to send at least one Brother to Galway to take over a school which had been moved from near the Shambles Barracks to a disused barrack in Lombard Street. Brother Paul O’Connor and Brother Dawson were sent to Galway. Cash in hand was one shilling. Social conditions were very bad, but the Brothers went ahead and established the Monastery School, known as The Mon. Before the school had been a year in operation, the improvement in the youth of the city was so evident that a public meeting was held in the school to vote thanks to the teachers, “whose zeal, attention and excellent arrangements had produced such happy results”.

Our first photograph today is of Mrs Anne Creaven, or “Ma” Creaven as she was known to generations of students and staff at UCG. She ran the coffee shop, a small intimate split level building which had originally been the College Sports Hall. It could only cater for a small number of people at one time, but student numbers were small in college then.

Thank you letter to the people of Galway from an orphanage survivor

The Survivors Integrated Service at the London Irish Centre recently received a letter from a survivor of St Anne’s Orphanage, Lenaboy, Taylors Hill — The centre thought it would be nice to share this anonymous letter with the people of Galway as they want to recognise that not all survivors’ experiences of institutions were the same. This letter is only meant to reflect one person’s experience of their time at St Anne’s and their memories of how the community of Galway came together to give them a magical Christmas experience every year.

Much of my travel is concerned with the past and those who inhabit it. So it was when I boarded O'Malley's Ferry for the short trip from Roonagh Pier to Clare Island for the first Storm Watching Weekend of the season hosted by Clare Island Lighthouse.

Do you know who Goldilocks is?

For the past two months there as not only been a lot of talk regarding Castlebar Pantomime’s move to Breaffy Areana, but also of who is playing Goldilocks! The directors of the show Sharon Lavelle and Antoinette Starken have been keeping the identity of the actress under close wraps! And its no good trying to get information out of other cast members or committee.  “No Comment”  seems to be the new mantra amongst cast and crew!!
