Athlone native, Michael Duignan, has been appointed Bishop of Galway, confirmation of the news emerging on Friday morning last.

It was confirmed this morning (Friday) that His Holiness Pope Francis has accepted the request for retirement of Bishop Brendan Kelly, heretofore Bishop of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Apostolic Administrator of Kilfenora; and has appointed Bishop Michael Duignan, Bishop of Clonfert, to minister simultaneously as Bishop of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Apostolic Administrator of Kilfenora.

Bealnamulla native, Fr. Michael Duignan, will be ordained Bishop of Clonfert in St. Brendan’s Cathedral, Loughrea, on Sunday afternoon. Fr. Duignan replaces outgoing Bishop John Kirby (also a native of Athlone) who has retired from the position to which he was appointed in April 1988.
