The long rumbling saga of the Corrib gas project was given some fresh impetus yesterday when Minister of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív along with Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resource Éamon Ryan announced a new initiative to resolve the issue.

The response to the Government’s announcement last week that a new community forum is to be established to tackle the long-running Corrib gas saga has been received positively, although Shell to Sea have yet to release a statement on the matter.

The new Corrib Community Forum, which is due to hold its first meeting this morning (Friday) under the chairmanship of Mr Joe Brosnan, could be in for a rocky start due to the lack of representation by leading community groups.

Local community groups expressed their discontent with the Forum for North West Mayo at Belmullet on Friday with a press conference being disrupted by angry outbursts from local groups who were unhappy with the procedure of the behind-closed-doors, invite-only forum.
