IT’S A Wonderful Life, one of the best loved movies of all time, and a Christmas favourite, will be screened this weekend.

THE FIRST film to be made inside Saudi Arabia; the Snow White tale reimagined as a girl and a troupe of bullfighters in Spain; and popular French actress Audrey Tautou as a proto-feminist - are just some of the delights in store for film fans at the Galway Film Society autumn/winter season screenings.

Records show that post office business has been conducted in the Eglinton Street area since the 1850s. The Ordnance Survey map of 1872 shows the ‘Postal and Telegraph Office’ in the house at the corner of Francis Street and Daly’s Place, where Emerson & Conway solicitors are today. Prior to 1885, the local postmaster Mr Cornwall provided the premises but, as business expanded, the building became too small. It could not accommodate parcels and a separate outside premises for a parcel office was rented at a cost of £15 a year.

Westport Film Club will host a screening of the 1940 James Stewart comedy The Shop Around the Corner at its next screening on Wednesday, December 5 at 8.45pm in Westport Cineplex.
