The Galway footballers will head to Cusack Park in Mullingar on Sunday in good spirits to take on Westmeath (2pm) in the second round of the National Football League.

After claiming a seventh Westmeath title Garrycastle will be hoping to make a significant impact in next Sunday’s Leinster Senior Club Championship quarter-final clash with Longford’s Emmet Óg, Killoe.

For over an hour after the final whistle on Sunday at Cusack Park Garrycastle players, management, and supporters stood chatting happily, taking photographs, discussing events, and simply basking in the glory of arguably their sweetest Westmeath SFC victory.

Sunday’s Cusack Park Westmeath Senior Football decider between Garrycastle and Mullingar Shamrocks promises to be a fascinating affair.

The one remaining semi-final berth in the senior football championship will be filled this weekend with either Garrycastle or The Downs advancing to meet St Loman’s. These sides meet in Rochfortbridge on Saturday at 5.30pm in what should be a tighter affair than the odds might suggest.

There are three big games down for decision this weekend in the senior ranks. On Friday night in Cusack Park C/F/C/W take on Killucan in the relegation play-off. Both sides have been affected by missing players all year and were likely candidates for this fixture from a long way out.

Round three of the Westmeath senior football championship takes place this weekend and there are few if any certainties in what should be an interesting selection of games. The Downs, Garrycastle, Castledaly, Maryland, Shamrocks, and St Loman’s have each been given the favourites tag ahead of their respective games and while they may all oblige, with question marks hanging over most teams, I expect a few upsets over the weekend.

Cusack Park plays host to an attractive double-header this Saturday with our footballers in action against Fermanagh at 3pm in round one of the All-Ireland SFC qualifiers followed by the meeting of Westmeath and Waterford in the hurling qualifiers.
