‘Understanding Palestine’ talk next week

A special public event will be held in the Galway next Wednesday (March 8) to celebrate International Women’s Day.

A two-day conference will take place at the University of Galway this weekend exploring the experience of Irish Travellers’ experience of the State from 1922 to 2022. The event, running as part of the Decade of Centenaries Programme, will also examine the impacts of that experience and the lessons to be learned from it.

LOYALIST BILLY Hutchinson, a Belfast city councillor, will be among the readers at the Over The Edge annual non-fiction special on Thursday October 28 at 6.30pm.

Galway is fortunate to be home to many people who bring an enormous amount to an understanding of the place where they live, and also to the country as a whole. Two of those people have now combined to produce a book that will do that and more, bringing to life a history we had consigned to monochrome and sepia.

IN 1925, Aran Island born writer, Liam O'Flaherty, published his breakthrough novel, The Informer. In that year, he also joined the Radical Club in Dublin, a forum for progressive artists and writers.

The centenary of James Connolly's execution for his role in the 1916 Rising will be marked in Galway with a public lecture on the history of socialism and republicanism, including Connolly's contribution to both.
