The Born building in Newtownsmith was voted Galway’s favourite building in a telephone poll carried out by Galway Bay FM to mark Open House Galway 2010 which was held last weekend. Born headed a list which included the Augustinian Church, the Marine Institute, GMIT, and the Galway City Museum.

Three architectural practices are working with Transition Year students in Westmeath schools on A Space for Learning, a national design competition created by the Irish Architecture Foundation to challenge current thinking on school design, where architects collaborate with the end-users of educational spaces - the students.

More than 170 architects, architectural graduates, and students already have registered their interest in submitting their ideas for the redevelopment of the Centre Pier in Galway Harbour.

The inaugural Open House Galway programme was launched along with details of the city’s first architectural festival. The event, in partnership with the Irish Architecture Foundation, takes place from October 16 to 18. By selecting some of the city’s best examples of quality design, Open House aims to enthuse and engage the public in the built environment. Guided tours will be provided by the architect of each participating building.

An opportunity to explore the difference between modern homes and those of days gone by will be provided to children as part of Open House Galway, the architecture event which takes place from October 16 to 18. Children from seven to 12-years-old are invited to the Galway City Museum, where workshops will encourage them to think about their environment. The workshops take place on Saturday October 17 and are free of charge, places must be pre-booked at www.openhousegalway.ie

The RTE 1 Nationwide programme is due to feature Open House Galway, which takes place in association with the Irish Architecture Foundation, on the weekend of October 16-18. The programme, due to be broadcast at 7pm on Wednesday October 14, will preview many of the quality-designed buildings in the Open House programme as well as interviews with architects.
