An Taoiseach Enda Kenny said this week that he expected that Ireland West Airport would qualify for a higher level of funding than is the norm for regional airports from the EU.

Galway County Councillors have agreed to the local authority taking an equity share in Ireland West Airport Knock, in an attempt to secure the future of the transport facility.

Last night sitting Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony announced his intention to seek a nomination to run in the Galway West constituency in the next General Election. The decision by the TD who has been elected twice in Mayo, in 2007 and 2011, had been expected after a large swathe of his territory had been annexed by the Galway constituency following the 2012 Constituency Commission report. The changes also saw Mayo drop from a five seater constituency to a four seater constituency.

The elected members of Mayo County Council approved the raising of a €7.3 million loan to fund the purchase of a 17.5 per cent stake in Ireland West Airport Knock by seven local authorities (Mayo County Council, Sligo County Council, Roscommon County Council, Donegal County Council, Leitrim County Council, Galway County Council, and Galway City Council) in the region at their meeting on Monday. The funding will be used to try to secure the future of the airport which saw more than 700,000 passengers use the airport last year.

Getting tax incentives in place to attract industry and commerce to set up around Ireland West Airport is the key future of the development of the airport, it was outlined again this week. Joe Gilmore, managing director of Ireland West Airport Knock, addressed the February meeting of the economic development and enterprise support strategic policy committee of Mayo County Council on Wednesday afternoon in the airport.

This airport proves its worth on a daily basis.  It employs over 100 people and has seen more than 700,000 passengers pass through its doors this year alone. It brings millions of euro into the local economy and its benefits are felt right across the west and north west. It is a vital part of the tourism infrastructure in the region and its future must be secured.”

More than 91,000 passengers used Ireland West Airport Knock in July of this year, making it the busiest month in the airport’s 28 year history.
