Seminar in Athlone to highlight safety and policing issues for the LGBT community

It is a basic right to feel safe and protected from physical and verbal abuse, bullying, and threats, no matter what your background and identity is. While attitudes towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people have changed and improved over recent years, LGBT people are still experiencing homophobia and transphobia because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. Irish research has indicated that more than half of all LGBT people have experienced verbal abuse and more than one-fifth physical violence. However, many incidents are currently not being reported.
