Lack of work on Leigue Cemetery worrying councillors
Independent Ballina councillor Gerry Ginty said this week that he fears that a reduction of €5,000 in a grant given to The Friends of Leigue, who maintain Leigue Cemetery in the town, has led to no maintenance works being carried out on the cemetery yet this year.

Clarke keeps up family tradition in Ballina
Independent Ballina councillor Peter Clarke followed in the footsteps of his late father and grandfather when he took the mayor’s chain in Ballina Town Council on Wednesday night. Clarke who was first elected in 2004 took over the stewardship of the council from outgoing mayor Frances McAndrew after he was nominated unopposed for the position for the coming year.
New housing scheme ‘putting a gun” to tenants heads
purchase scheme which came into force at the beginning of the year has been roundly criticised by members of Mayo County Council. A number of changes have been introduced with the main ones being that the scheme will only apply to new build homes from now on only for new tenants, and that existing tenants can have only a two year window to purchase their current homes. Once that two year period is over, if they want to get involved in the scheme they will have to move to a new build home, which may be nowhere near where they currently live.
