The Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council has issued a clarion call for the Government to step in and ensure the future of Ireland West Airport Knock (IWAK) - which is facing into major losses this year due to the impact of Covid-19.

Fianna Fáil Senator, Lisa Chambers, has called on the Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan, to bring forward a plan to secure the future of Ireland West Airport Knock.

Much has been said over the years about what a positive impact Ireland West Airport has on the region — but now that impact has been quantified, with the revelation that it is feeding hundreds of thousands of visitors to the greater Galway region. On top of this, the airport opens this decade as a key driver of investment, located as it is on a 600-acre strategic development zone that is set to create thousands of jobs in the next ten years.

Tourism Ireland has teamed up with Flybe and Ireland West Airport Knock, to promote flights to Knock from Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh and grow tourist numbers to the west of Ireland this autumn. The joint campaign will run in Britain during August and September.

Earlier this week Ireland West Airport Knock and Knock Shrine announced that the first Diocesan pilgrimage from the Archdiocese of Boston to Ireland’s National Marian Shrine will take place in July this year. The announcement of this pilgrimage follows a similar pilgrimage from the New York Archdiocese which took place last summer. This will be the first ever transatlantic service operated by Aer Lingus, from Boston, to Ireland West Airport Knock.
