University of Galway has celebrated the achievements of its 2026 Alumni Award honourees at its gala award ceremony on campus.

Medtronic plc, a global leader in healthcare technology, today (Thursday) announced the establishment of a European software development hub in Galway for its Patient Care Systems (PCS) function. The site will serve as a global Centre of Excellence for cardiac digital health, supporting the development of advanced software solutions that enhance care for patients with implanted cardiac devices. The announcement was made in Galway alongside An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin.

Galway’s position as one of Europe’s leading centres for medical technology innovation recently received another major endorsement with the announcement that Boston Scientific is to invest €75 million in expanding its research and development capabilities in the city.

Datavant, the data collaboration platform trusted for healthcare, has officially opened its new state-of-the-art Global R&D Centre at Bonham Quay in Galway. The company also announced that it has already hired 100 employees in Ireland – well ahead of its target to fill 125 roles by the end of next year.

New, purpose-built laboratories in Boston’s Building 2 – where construction commenced in 2023 – will provide facilities for teams to design, develop and test next-generation medical technologies across a range of cardiovascular therapies, as well as areas such as heart failure and renal denervation, where a catheter in the kidney can reduce blood pressure.

University of Galway’s Institute for Clinical Trials has been awarded the 2025 Collaboration in Medtech Award at the Irish Medtech Awards.

Semiconductor-producer Arm has celebrated the official opening of its new state-of-the-art facility in Galway City. Since establishing operations in Galway in 2014, Arm has expanded to 90 staff members locally, and more than 4800 employees across Europe.
