I had been to Northern Ireland on many occasions, but yet, I never felt that I had been to it. That I'd never sat back, taken the time to stroll around, to experience the variety of break types it offers. I suppose that emanates from the perception we had of Northern Ireland through decades of growing up and not seeing it as a potentially wonderful location to have a holiday.

International prize for Mayo novelist

Louisburgh author Mike McCormack has been celebrating on the double this week, with the news that his third novel Solar Bones, which is written as a single sentence novel, was this week picked as the winner of the Goldsmiths Prize for Fiction and with it the €10,000 prize money for the winner and has been shortlisted for Irish Book of the Year. The Goldsmiths Prize was established in 2013 to celebrate the qualities of creative daring associated with Goldsmiths University and to reward fiction that breaks the mould or opens up new possibilities for the novel form. The annual prize of £10,000 is awarded to a book that is deemed genuinely novel and which embodies the spirit of invention that characterises the genre at its best. McCormack was announced as the winner of this award on Wednesday.

Mayo retailers shortlisted in national industry awards

Four Mayo retailers are through to the final of Ireland’s Forecourt and Convenience Retailer Awards (IF&CR) 2016, it was announced this week. McHugh's Spar/Texaco in Ballindine is through to the 'Forecourt Category 2 with C Store 1,101-1,750 sq ft finals. Hoban’s Centra in Westport is a 'Newcomer of the Year' finalist. Corrib (SPAR) Ballyhaunis is a finalist in the 'Best Customer Service' category, while Corrib (SPAR) Swinford is a finalist in the 'Best Food to Go category'.

Veronica Byrne, a native of Athlone and a graduate of Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) has won the 2015 Irish Hospitality Institute (IHI) Graduate of the Year Award, at a recent ceremony held in the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel, Dublin.
